C/2023 P1 (Nishimura) 2023-Sep-11 Mike Olason

Clouds covered the comet yesterday morning, but this morning 2023 Sept 11 was mostly clear. The comet appeared above the Catalina Mountains at 1220UT (520AM) in bright orange twilight skies. There were almost no stars for Astrometrica to even attempt to calculate the comet magnitude, so using old software and a calculator the magnitude was determined to be 4.1 give or take a few tenths. The comet was visible with images only 3 to 5 seconds long using only a 25mm finderscope and an old ST-402ME CCD Camera, no tail was visible. The morning of 2023 Sept 12 will find a comet barely at the limits of what my equipment can detect as it rises 15 minutes later, unless the comet brightens a lot in the next 24 hours, rain may make the attempt futile.
