C/2021 A1 (Leonard) 2022-Jan-01 Jan Hattenbach

Here's the newest photo, from yesterday (New Year's Day), again around 20h UTC. The tail was shorter, but practically all of it on the photo was visible in binoculars, too. Impressive sight!

Comet Leonard continues to amaze in the new year! It's now 2 days from perihelion.

Saw it today (Jan. 1, 19:45 UTC) from 2300m asl. Estimate 4.6mag, it appeared barely brighter than Epsilon Mic naked eye and in 10x50.

In 10x50 binoculars, I could follow the tail over 7 degrees this time! Before never more than 2-3°. I looked much brighter than the last two days. Seems like the latest outburst has spread over the tail. In my 10" Newtonian Leonard looks very healthy with a bright, stellar core and a round, evenly bright coma.

Here's a quick photo with 200mm, f/4, ISO3200, 180s
